Under the Fair Credit Reporting Act (FCRA), you have the right to know when a background check is being performed, to give your written consent, to know if information from the report is used against you, to see a copy of your report, and to dispute inaccurate or incomplete information. Most background checks cover the past seven years in accordance with FCRA guidelines. However, this can vary by state law, the type of position, and the specific search being conducted. Some positions (like those with high security clearances or executive roles) may look back further.

A standard background check may include criminal history, employment verification, education verification, reference checks, and in some cases, credit history. Certain positions may require additional checks such as driving records, professional license verification, or drug testing.

If you find incorrect information on your report, contact both the background screening company and the source of the information (such as the court or former employer). The FCRA requires consumer reporting agencies to investigate disputes within 30 days. Be sure to document all communications and provide any evidence supporting your claim.
